Summoner

job · SMN

The Summoner calls an avatar, a spirit or a primal to fight beside it, and orders it to use Blood Pacts: big magic bursts, party buffs, healing, sleep and slow, all paid for in MP instead of cast times.

SMN · two-hour Astral Flow · 127 job abilities · 24 trait ranks · 146 spells · 22 weapon skills

What the job does:
Summoner is a pet job. You call one avatar (Carbuncle, Ifrit, Shiva, Garuda, Titan, Ramuh, Leviathan, Fenrir, Diabolos, Cait Sith, Siren, and later Odin, Alexander and Atomos) or one of the eight elemental spirits, and it stays with you, hitting the monster and waiting for your orders. Your orders are Blood Pacts, in two kinds: Blood Pact: Rage (attacks and debuffs that hurt or hinder the monster) and Blood Pact: Ward (buffs, heals, sleep and slow). Each kind has its own timer, so a Rage and a Ward can go off in the same minute.

What it is good at: damage that does not depend on casting (the avatar acts while you move or rest), a different tool in every avatar (Carbuncle heals, Garuda hastes, Shiva sleeps, Ifrit hits), and big magic bursts from the elemental Rage pacts.

What it is bad at: standing still. Every second the avatar is out you pay MP (perpetuation), so a Summoner runs down quickly and needs refresh and rest. And the avatar's HP is low: a monster that hits hard sends it away and you pay again to call it back.

From the Summoner's seat a fight is: call the avatar, send it in with Assault, fire a Ward for the party, fire a Rage into the next skillchain, and keep your eye on your MP.

Role in a party:
Damage and support at once. A party expects burst damage on a skillchain and a buff that fits the fight: Hastega for melee, Healing Ruby II for a hurt party, Shining Ruby for Protect and Shell, Dream Shroud for casters.

What the Summoner brings that nothing else does:

- Blood Pact: Rage nukes that burst. Fire IV, Meteor Strike, Thunderstorm, Heavenly Strike, Grand Fall and the rest hit like magic bursts, and pets get the same burst step bonus as players.
- Hastega II (level 99), Crystal Blessing (level 99, a TP bonus for the party), Dream Shroud (magic attack and defence), Crimson Howl (attack), Ecliptic Growl (stats): buffs no other job has.
- Healing Ruby II and Spring Water: party heals without a healer.
- Soothing Ruby (level 94): removes several ailments from the party.
- Astral Flow (level 1, hourly): the strongest pact each avatar has.
- Dual pets: a Summoner can hold an avatar and a second pet at the same time. See subjobs.

Subjobs:
Your support job's abilities work at half your level, so at 99 you have a level 49 subjob.

Subjob | When to use it | What it gives at 49 |
Red Mage | The default. | Refresh (level 41) to pay perpetuation, Convert, Haste (48), Fast Cast |
Scholar | Sustained fights. | Sublimation (stored MP), Light Arts, Penury and Celerity |
White Mage | When no healer. | Cure IV, Haste (40), Raise, Curaga II |
Dragoon | Damage. | A wyvern out at the same time as your avatar |
Beastmaster | Farming. | A jug pet or charmed monster alongside your avatar |
Black Mage | Nuking while the avatar tanks. | Stun, Sleep II, Elemental Seal |

Start with Red Mage. Refresh pays most of your perpetuation. Dual pets are on: with Dragoon support you can have a wyvern and an avatar; with Beastmaster, a jug pet and an avatar. Perpetuation is only charged once.

How the abilities work together:
Know the durations. Base recasts are shown; job ability recasts on Vanadreams are 15% shorter.

Ability | Level | Lasts | Recast | What it does |
Astral Flow | 1 | briefly | 1 hour | Unlocks your avatar's strongest pact; perpetuation is free while it is up |
Blood Pact: Rage | 1 | instant | 1 min | Orders an attack or debuff pact |
Blood Pact: Ward | 1 | instant | 1 min | Orders a buff or heal pact |
Assault | 1 | instant | 5 s | The avatar attacks |
Retreat | 1 | instant | 5 s | The avatar stops attacking |
Release | 1 | instant | 5 s | Sends the avatar away |
Elemental Siphon | 50 | instant | 5 min | Drains MP from your spirit into you |
Avatar's Favor | 55 | long | 5 min | Your avatar's special buff goes onto the party |
Apogee | 70 | next pact | 3 min | The next pact costs 1.5 times the MP and has no recast |
Mana Cede | 87 | instant | 5 min | Costs 100 MP; the avatar gets at least 1,000 TP |
Astral Conduit | 96 | briefly | 1 hour | Blood pact recast removed; MP pool doubled |

Perpetuation. Every few seconds the avatar costs you MP. It costs less when the day or weather matches the avatar's element, with Auto Refresh (25 and 90), Refresh from a Red Mage, Caller's gear, and the Evans Earring, and it is free during Astral Flow. Avatar's Favor raises it by 20%. At 0 MP the avatar leaves. Never pay for a long fight with MP you do not have: Sublimation and Refresh are the answer.

Spirits. The eight spirits cast their element's spells by themselves every 30 to 90 seconds (the cooldown shortens with your Summoning Magic skill and the day and weather, and is 30 seconds under Astral Flow). Light Spirit is the odd one: it casts Cure and Curaga on your party and alliance when they are hurt, and Protect, Shell, Haste and Regen on them while you are not fighting. Elemental Siphon turns a spirit's MP into yours; the more Summoning Magic skill and the better the day and weather, the more you get. Call the spirit of the day's element when you plan to Siphon.

Rage and Ward timers. Both kinds start at 60 seconds (shorter on Vanadreams) and gear, Avatar's Favor and job point gifts take up to 40 seconds off. The recast starts when the pact actually goes off, not when you order it. Pacts cost MP and no TP.

Apogee for two big ones. Apogee makes the next pact cost 1.5 times the MP and wipes its recast. Use it for Hastega II and then Crystal Blessing at the start of a pull, or for two bursts in a row on a long chain.

Astral Flow. Costs every point of MP you have (it requ [cut off]

Working with other jobs:
Magic bursts. Cast a pact of the right element inside the chain's window. The elemental Rage pacts that burst are Fire II and IV, Blizzard II and IV, Aero II and IV, Stone II and IV, Thunder II and IV, Water II and IV, and the level 75 pacts (Meteor Strike, Heavenly Strike, Wind Blade, Geocrush, Thunderstorm, Grand Fall), plus Meteorite, Holy Mist, Nether Blast, Sonic Buffet, Tornado II, Thunderspark and Level ? Holy.

Skillchain | Pacts |
Transfixion | Meteorite, Holy Mist, Level ? Holy |
Compression | Nether Blast |
Liquefaction | Fire II, Fire IV, Meteor Strike |
Scission | Stone II, Stone IV, Geocrush |
Reverberation | Water II, Water IV, Grand Fall |
Detonation | Aero II, Aero IV, Wind Blade, Sonic Buffet, Tornado II |
Induration | Blizzard II, Blizzard IV, Heavenly Strike |
Impaction | Thunder II, Thunder IV, Thunderstorm, Thunderspark |
Gravitation | Stone and Geocrush, Nether Blast |
Distortion | Water and Ice pacts |
Fusion | Fire pacts, Meteorite and Holy Mist |
Fragmentation | Thunder pacts, Aero pacts |
Light | Fire, Aero, Thunder or light pacts |
Darkness | Stone, Water, Ice pacts, Nether Blast |

A pact takes the avatar a moment to deliver, so order it as the closing weapon skill lands, not after. The avatar has to be near the monster and within pact range of you. For a burst, swap to the avatar that matches the chain: Ifrit on Fusion and Liquefaction, Ramuh on Fragmentation and Impaction, Shiva on Distortion and Induration.

Chains you can ask for. Real examples with the Skillchains page:

- Light: Savage Blade then Tachi: Kasha. Burst with Ifrit's Fire IV or Meteor Strike, Garuda's Aero IV, Ramuh's Thunder IV.
- Fusion: Chant du Cygne then Tachi: Kasha. Burst with Ifrit.
- Fragmentation: Requiescat then Savage Blade. Burst with Ramuh or Garuda.
- Darkness: Chant du Cygne then Requiescat. Burst with Titan, Leviathan or Shiva.

Trusts that play for chains are Ayame (opens), Gessho and Maat (close).

Melee. Hastega II first, Crimson Howl or Crystal Blessing next, Earthen Ward for the tank. Hastega II stacks with Bard songs and Haste.

Healers. A White Mage or a healer Trust covers cures; you cover the gaps with Healing Ruby II or Spring Water. Do not step on their Haste: Hastega (level 48) and Hastega II (level 99) share a slot with Haste.

Casters. Dream Shroud lifts magic attack and defence for the Black Mage. Diabolos's favor refreshes MP. A Summoner and a Black Mage together make a burst engine: nuke and pact in the same window.

Levelling it:

5 | Poison Nails, Moonlit Charge |

25 | Auto Refresh, Aerial Armor, Mewing Lullaby |
30 | Reraise II |
50 | Elemental Siphon, Double Slap, Max MP Boost III |
55 | Avatar's Favor, Meteorite, Eerie Eye |
60 | The tier IV pacts, Blood Boon |
70 | Apogee, Flaming Crush, Predator Claws, Spinning Dive, Mountain Buster, Chaotic Strike, Rush, Blood Boon II |
75 | The level 75 nukes, Odin, Alexander and Atomos |
85 | Stout Servant |

- Levels 1 to 20. Call Carbuncle or a spirit, send it in with Assault and stay behind. Avatar spells are learned one at a time, so collect them as you go. Trusts do the rest: a tank (Curilla) and a healer (Ygnas) make it easy.
- Levels 20 to 50. Hastega and Sleepga arrive. Learn which avatar you want for which job.
- Levels 50 to 75. Elemental Siphon, Avatar's Favor and the tier IV pacts.
- To 99. Your level cap starts at 70. To open 99, finish Shattering Stars with Maat in Ru'Lude Gardens at level 66 or higher. Maat as a Summoner calls an avatar after 10 seconds and again 30 seconds after you kill it: kill the avatar, then hit Maat, and keep Carbuncle or your own avatar out to hold him while you cure. You level on standard experience rates with Records of Eminence and Trusts; capacity points are 10x. Classic mode holds you at 75, then 90, until you finish its lists. In Moogle Mode every spell a vendor sells is learned as you reach its level; avatar spells are not on that list.

Good Trusts for a levelling Summoner: Curilla or Invincible Shield (UC) to tank, Ygnas to heal, Karaha-Baruha (a White Mage and Summoner like yourself). Use !trustengage to choose how they join the fight.

At 99 and endgame:
Merits. Two groups.

- Group 1: Avatar physical accuracy and magical accuracy (+3 a level), physical attack and magical attack (+2 a level), Summoning magic cast time.
- Group 2: Meteor Strike, Heavenly Strike, Wind Blade, Geocrush, Thunderstorm and Grand Fall each have a merit that raises that pact's damage.

Job points. Master the job at 2,100 job points. Gifts worth reaching first:

- 45, 320, 845, 1,620: Avatar and Spirit Physical Attack and Defence (+15, +23, +30, +38).
- 60, 360, 910, 1,710: Physical Accuracy and Evasion (+10, +15, +20, +25).
- 80, 405, 980, 1,805: Magical Attack and Defence (+5, +8, +10, +13).
- 100 and 1,200: Blood Pact recast time (-5 seconds each).
- 150, 500, 1,125, 2,000: Summoning Magic Skill (+5, +8, +10, +13).
- 2,100: all hourly abilities come back 15 minutes sooner.

Spend category points on Blood Pact Damage, Astral Conduit Effect (Rage +1% a rank, Ward duration +1% a rank), Spirit Magic Damage, Mana Cede Effect (+50 TP a rank), Avatar's Favor Effect and Astral Flow Effect.

Master levels. Maat or the Nomad Moogle in Ru'Lude Gardens hands out Job Breaker at 99 and Master Breaker on a mastered level 99 job. Mastering the job opens Superior Level gear for it.

Where it shines. Skillchain parties and parties without a healer: Omen, Odyssey, Ambuscade, Vagary, Dynamis - Divergence, Limbus, Walk of Echoes. Trusts are allowed in most of them. Sortie, Nyzul Isle, Einherjar, Salvage and Assault do not allow Trusts, so bring players there.

Gear to aim for:
Band | Weapons | Armor and accessories |
1 to 50 | Elm Staff, Oak Staff | Evoker's Torque (30) |
51 to 69 | Mahogany Staff, Elemental staves | Evoker's Horn, Evoker's Doublet, Evoker's Bracers, Evoker's Spats, Evoker's Pigaches |
70 to 79 | Mage's Staff | Summoner's Horn, Summoner's Dblt., Summoner's Brcr., Summoner's Spats, Summoner's Pgch., Summoner's Cape, Evoker's Ring |
80 to 98 | Mage's Staff | Caller's Horn +2, Caller's Doublet +1, Caller's Bracers +1, Caller's Spats +2, Caller's Pgch. +2, Caller's Pendant, Caller's Sash |
99 | Nirvana, Espiritus, Gridarvor, Khatvanga, Summoner's Staff | Beckoner's Horn +3, Glyphic Doublet +3, Glyphic Bracers +3, Glyphic Spats +3, Apogee Pumps +1 |

- Artifact: the Evoker's set, which becomes the Convoker's set (Convoker's Horn +3 and the rest).
- Relic: the Summoner's set, which becomes the Glyphic set (Glyphic Horn +3, Glyphic Doublet +3, Glyphic Bracers +3, Glyphic Spats +3).
- Empyrean: the Caller's set, which becomes the Beckoner's set (Beckoner's Horn +3, Beckoner's Doublet, Beckoner's Bracers, Beckoner's Spats).
- Also: the Apogee set (Apogee Crown +1, Apogee Dalmatica, Apogee Mitts +1, Apogee Slacks +1, Apogee Pumps +1), Summoner's Collar, Evans Earring (less perpetuation, shorter pact recast), Lugalbanda Earring, Conveyance Cape, Campestres's Cape, Elan Strap +1 (pact damage).
- Weapons: Nirvana (mythic staff, "Garland of Bliss"), Khatvanga (Aeonic staff, "Shattersoul"), Espiritus (more pact damage and faster pact recast), Gridarvor (made by Oboro in Port Jeuno; avatar perpetuation cost down by 5).
- Set help: vanagear builds a summoning, pact and idle set for you.

Common mistakes:
- No MP plan. The avatar's upkeep is a bill. Refresh, Sublimation and a spirit with Elemental Siphon pay it.
- Ordering a pact after the chain ends. A pact takes a moment to go off. Order it as the closer lands.
- Wrong avatar for the chain. Check the table; a Thunder pact on an Induration chain is a normal hit.
- Spending Astral Flow on a weak fight. It uses all your MP. Save it for a boss or an emergency.
- Leaving the avatar on Assault against a monster that casts. Retreat it from area attacks or release it.
- Hasting twice. Hastega and Haste share a slot; settle who casts it.
- Forgetting Apogee costs more MP. Do not use it at low MP.
- Using Avatar's Favor in a short fight. It costs perpetuation and grows every 10 seconds; keep it for long fights.
