Waughroon Shrine battlefields

guide · Server guide

Waughroon Shrine connects to Palborough Mines. Enter at the arena's entrance: trade your orb or testimony, or examine it while holding the key item. See also Battlefields.

Trusts: a fight either allows Trusts or it doesn't. Where it doesn't, any Trusts you have out are sent home when you enter and can't be called inside. Where it does, each Trust takes one of the fight's party slots. See Trusts.

Orb fights

Crustacean Conundrum

Cloudy Orb. Level 20 cap, 3 players, 15 minutes.

Enemies: Heavy Metal Crab (level 22, red mage: Waterga, Bio, Blind) and Metal Crab (level 19). Both have tiny HP pools (30 and 15), but every hit, weapon skill hit or spell does at most 1 damage. Damage-over-time effects do nothing to them. Their melee hits can drain 30 HP. They use Bubble Shower, Bubble Curtain, Big Scissors and Scissor Guard.

Strategy: Count hits, not damage. Bring jobs that swing often: dual wield, double attack, hand-to-hand, multi-hit weapon skills. Each landed hit of a multi-hit weapon skill counts once. Kill the Metal Crab first (15 hits), then the Heavy Metal Crab (30 hits). A white mage keeps everyone topped up against Waterga.

Rewards: 1,500 gil, Crab Shell, a Mannequin Body every win, a small chance of Mannequin Hands. Full spoils: Crustacean Conundrum.

Birds of a Feather

Sky Orb. Level 30 cap, 3 players, 15 minutes.

Enemies: Macha (level 32, red mage bird) casts Dispelga and Sleep. Sleep spells don't land on her. Neman (level 30) is a plain bird and can be charmed. Both use Helldive, Damnation Dive and the Barrage moves; Neman adds Wing Cutter.

Strategy: Kill Macha first; her Sleep and Dispelga are what lose this fight. A beastmaster can charm Neman and turn it on Macha. Keep someone free to wake whoever she puts to sleep.

Rewards: 3,000 gil, Bird Feathers, job belts and job earrings, scrolls. Full spoils: Birds of a Feather.

Grove Guardians

Sky Orb. Level 30 cap, 6 players, 30 minutes.

Enemies: Metsanneitsyt (level 36, the queen sapling: Stonega, Stone II, Aspir, Drain) and two Metsanhaltija guardians (32-33). None of them can be slept. The queen resists Silence. Saplings use Sprout Spin, Slumber Powder and Sprout Smack.

Rules of the fight: keep the queen within 10 yalms of every living guardian. If she is pulled away from one, she gains TP very fast and spams her moves.

Strategy: Fight all three in one spot. Tank the queen where the guardians stand. Kill the two guardians first, then the queen; once both guardians are dead, her leash no longer matters.

Rewards: 4,000 gil, job mantles and shields, scrolls, a Mannequin Body. Full spoils: Grove Guardians.

The Worm's Turn

Star Orb. Level 40 cap, 6 players, 30 minutes.

Enemies: Flayer Franz (level 45) and fifteen Flesh Eaters (38-40). All are worms that link together. They cast Stone II, Stonega, Rasp, Bind and Stoneskin, and use Full-Force Blow, Gastric Bomb, Sandspin, Tremors, MP Absorption and Sound Vacuum. Franz can't be slept or silenced, and pulls back anyone who strays far from him. Flesh Eaters can be charmed.

Strategy: Every worm must die. Sleep and kill the Flesh Eaters a few at a time, with a tank holding Franz until last. Worms stand back and cast, so melee should expect to chase. Area sleeps and a beastmaster's charm keep the numbers down.

Rewards: 6,000 gil, plus a roll each for
4 items: - Spirit Torque
- Nemesis Earring
- Earth Mantle
- Strike Shield

(about half each). Full spoils: The Worm's Turn.

Royal Jelly

Star Orb. Level 40 cap, 3 players, 15 minutes.

Enemies: eight Princess Jellies (level 35). Each takes a different element: it absorbs that element and is weak to the opposite one. Each casts Bind plus the enfeeble and nuke of its element. None can be slept.

Rules of the fight: once fighting, every princess crawls very slowly toward the centre of the arena. A princess that reaches the centre can't be damaged. When every living princess has reached the centre, they merge into Queen Jelly (level 41) with their combined HP. The Queen hits harder, gains TP quickly and casts every element plus Bindga.

Strategy: Kill princesses before they reach the centre. Melee are safest, since they never hit an absorbed element. If you nuke, check which element each princess resists before casting. If the Queen forms, fight her as one tough slime and keep Bindga in mind.

Rewards: 5,000 gil, Marksman's Ring, Mana Ring, Archer's Ring, weapons such as
4 items: - Dusky Staff
- Sealed Mace
- Shikar Bow
- Grudge Sword

. Full spoils: Royal Jelly.

3, 2, 1...

Comet Orb. Level 50 cap, 6 players, 30 minutes.

Enemies: one Time Bomb (level 55, 9999 HP). It never moves, never attacks and uses no TP moves. It can't be slept, stunned, bound, paralyzed, petrified or slowed by gravity.

Rules of the fight: the bomb counts down from 60 seconds once it is engaged. At zero it self-destructs, which wipes the party and ends the fight as a loss.

Strategy: Pure damage race. Bring six damage dealers, pre-buff and go in with TP if you can. Open with your strongest weapon skills and two-hours at once. A skillchain plus magic burst goes a long way.

Rewards: 12,000 gil, Bomb Arm (about half), Kageboshi or Odenta every win, an elemental belt. Full spoils: 3, 2, 1....

The Final Bout

Comet Orb. Level 50 cap, 3 players, 3 minutes.

Enemies: The Waughroon Kid (level 53 goobbue, monk). Strong melee with a regen, and hits can inflict Weight. He uses Blow, Beatdown, Uppercut and Blank Gaze. Blow and Blank Gaze always come twice in a row. At 40% HP he uses Counterstance.

Strategy: The clock is the enemy. Bring three heavy damage dealers and burst him down. Keep an eye on the second Blank Gaze: turn away after the first. Once Counterstance is up, his counters hurt, so finish with weapon skills rather than long melee.

Rewards: 8,000 gil, Boyahda Moss, two pieces from a list of mantles, gorgets, hands and head pieces. Full spoils: The Final Bout.

Grimshell Shocktroopers

Moon Orb. Level 60 cap, 6 players, 30 minutes.

Enemies: six quadav (level 62-64), all linked:

Name | Job | Notes |
Yo'Bhu Hideousmask | Warrior | Mighty Strikes |
Zo'Dhu Legslicer | White mage | Heals the others, Silence, Paralyze, Benediction |
Ka'Nha Jabbertongue | Black mage | -ga II nukes, Flare, Burst, Flood, Sleepga, Stun, Manafont |
Bi'Fho Jestergrin | Thief | Perfect Dodge |
Ku'Tya Hotblood | Paladin | Heals the others, Flash, Invincible |
Ea'Tho Cruelheart | Dark knight | Absorb spells, Stun, Blood Weapon |

All of them resist sleep strongly. Each [cut off]
